Kelet Product Zrt. in cooperation with the University of Debrecen and its Norwegian partner research the possibilities of using vegetable waste of horseradish primarily for the disinfection of surfaces in chemical industry and agriculture. This research takes place between January 2015 and April 2016.
As a result of this research, using environmentally friendly technologies, Kelet Product Zrt. will be able to produce essential oils and disinfectants that can be used in many areas of life.
The main aim of the project is to make products containing natural compounds from potentially dangerous vegetable waste using environmentally friendly technologies. The participants wish to conduct the necessary research and development by themselves.
“We aim to utilize and make harmless the potentially dangerous by-products – especially the secondary roots – which contain isothiocyanates, as well as the roots that are of unmarketable quality and/or size, together with the above-ground parts of the horseradish intensively cultivated in a large area around Debrecen in a way that results in new useful products usable in food industry, agriculture and other industries,” summarizes the point of the research dr. Gábor Vasas, Associate Professor and Head of Department of Botany of the University of Debrecen.
In the project we plan to utilize vegetable waste with the help of environmentally friendly technologies and methods developed by ourselves for the isolation of one valuable component. Our first method corresponds to the production of essential oil (isothiocyanate mixture), that is we divide the vegetable waste into isothiocyanates, which are dangerous in high concentration but can be potentially used in food and chemical industries as well as in agriculture, and other easily utilizable and non-hazardous by-products. In the course of our second method, a protein fraction rich in peroxidase enzyme is produced from the vegetable waste.
Both isolation methods will be developed. Experience gained during the research and development process together with market conditions will determine the proportion of the two products.
The participants of the project undertake the experimental research and investments necessary for developing new patentable environmentally friendly products and technological steps from potentially dangerous vegetable waste as raw material.
The project will be carried out by Kelet Product Zrt. (4233 Balkány, Ságvári E. út 12, and 4288 Újléta, Petőfi utca 41) in cooperation with the University of Debrecen (Debrecen, Egyetem tér 1) and NIVA in Norway (Oslo, Gaustadalléen 2, 21).
